Welcome to Fetching Etchings collection.

I am essentially a fanatical collector of etchings and other prints from 1800 to the Present Day and as such am not in a position to give valuations. I would always recommend visiting your nearest established auction house as they are well equipped to do this. I am not always available as this is very much a part time indulgence. During the summer months, I am throwing away money on our ruin in Normandy.. Due to this we only have somewhat unreliable solar panels to give power to our laptops, therefore replying to emails may be somewhat erratic.

One of our top animal and ornithological artists.  Born at Ramsgate, Kent.  Exhibited 1899-1940 at the R.A., R.I., R.E., S.W.A. and at the Paris Salon.  Lived in London, Yeovil, Somerset, Dorking, Surrey, Woodbridge and Orford, Suffolk.

Born in Ayrshire.  Painter and etcher.  Studied Glasgow School of Art.  Naval architect with the Admiralty 1917-19.  Travelled widely on the Continent.  Exhibited 1910-30.

GERALD LESLIE BROCKHURST   R.A.,R.E.(1890-1978)

Absolutely top quality etcher and lithographer.  Born in Birmingham, he studied art in Birmingham, France and Italy.  His etchings show the influence of early Renaissance Italian painters and Augustus John.  He is a much respected and sought after etcher.  He exhibited at the R.A. and R.E. from 1915.  Elected R.A.1937, R.E.1921.  He lived in Chelsea for some time and from 1939 he lived in New Jersey, USA.

Etcher of architectural and topographical views.  Born in Manchester.  Worked for the Daily Chronicle.  Later moving to Haslemere, Surrey.  Produced absolutely stunning etchings from England, Scotland, Italy and France.  He won the gold medal of the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1907.  Exhibited Paris Salon, R.A. and elsewhere.

Born in Haywards Heath, Sussex.  Studied at Eastbourne and Maidstone Colleges of Art.  Specializes in landscape and wildlife.  Exhibits widely including R.A., the provinces and abroad.  1979 he was elected a member of the Printmakers Council.  Also a member of the S.W.L.A. and R.B.A. in 1982.  Lives in Rye, Sussex.

SIR FRANCIS SEYMOUR HADEN P.R.E. 1818-1910.

Highly important painter and etcher.  Practised as a surgeon, etching in his spare time.  Whistler, who was his brother in law, influenced him greatly.  They were founders of the Modern Etching Movement.  Also founded the R.E. where he exhibited 286 times.  Knighted 1894.

EGHAM LOCK                      Beautiful and rare little etching on white watermarked L.P.E paper.  Narrow margins trimmed to 1/3rd inch of plate.  Small abrasions and loss of paper very top right edge.  Tiny hole (pin prick size) in the sky right side above lock gate.  Otherwise good clean condition.  Faint pencil signature bottom right and the no.  16 bottom right corner.  No.  16 may refer to Malcolm Salaman's reference in his catalogue of Haden's etchings.  This is a very crisp impression after the removal of the title and signature in the plate.  Pencilled Collector's monogram, E.W. verso bottom right and reference no.  a47816 bottom left.   Image size 6 x 8¾ inches / 150 x 220 mm. £180   Click here to see.

NETHERLANDS *** SOLD ***                       Superbly drawn etching.  Margins trimmed.  Time toned where old mount was placed.  Old tape mark at top which has soaked through the paper.  This does not effect the image, which is excellent apart from very faint time tone and foxing, only showing when held up to light.  Could be cleaned, but once newly framed and mounted would look fine just as it is.  Part of a title at bottom left reads, '--veland' which could be Beveland? ELYSE ASHE LORD   fl.  1915-71.  

Watercolourist and colour print artist.  She was elected R.I. 1932 and was a member of the Society of Graver-Printers in Colour.  Favoured exotic and Far Eastern figure subjects, treated in delicate and imaginative colours.  Her work was published by the London dealer Alexander Reid & Lefevre.  Showed at that Gallery, R.A., R.I., R.S.A., Fine Art Society and Paris Salon, where she gained a Silver Medal for colour prints.  In 1990 Cyril Gerber Fine Art held an exhibition of her work.  Lived in Bexley, Kent.  

MUSIC IN THE GARDEN                       Superb, rare coloured etching in the artist's typical Oriental style.  Remains of tape top corners of uncut margins.  Excellent condition, with good fresh deep colour.  Limited edition number 26/75.   Bottom left reads.  'by Chou Feng' and bottom right, 'print by E.A. Scottish painter and etcher.  Born in Renfrewshire.  Worked in a bank 1906-1915, before serving with the Royal Artillery in W.W.1. Studied at the Glasgow School of Art 1919-1923.  Cartoonist for the Glasgow Evening News 1920-1930.  He visited the Continent and North Africa on many occasions etching views in Algeria, Spain, Italy, Belgium and elsewhere.  Exhibited R.S.A., G.I. and L.  and Paris Salon, Glasgow Art Gallery holds his work.

ALEXANDER LOW M.A. *** SOLD ***                       Another example of the superb portrait work of Malcolm Osborne.  The subject is , 'Alexander Low - Regius Professor of Anatomy, Aberdeen University 1925-1938.' Unfortunately the paper has been munched by a hungry worm! Tiny holes in the uncut margin bottom left corner, with one microscopic hole within the image bottom left.  Only seen when held to the light.  A larger worm hole approx .50 cm.  long in the image top left.  Slight crinkling in paper.  Remains of 2 tape hinges top margin edge.  Otherwise the etching is in clean fresh condition.  Once framed and mounted all these minor problems will pale into insignificance! Painter and printmaker.  Born at Stourbridge.  Originally trained as an engineer before studying art at South Kensington and Westminster.   1891-1924 Head of the Engraving School at the R.C.A., becoming Professor in 1913.  Lived in London and Sussex.  Exhibited widely and prolifically including R.A., R.E. and F.I.N.

NATHANIEL SPARKS  

R.E. 1880-1957.  Born in Bristol.  A distant cousin of Thomas Hardy.  Painter and etcher.  Studied Bristol School of Art and at the R.C.A. under Frank Short.  He printed some of Whistler's plates.  Exhibited 1905-37.  R.A., R.E. and elsewhere.   Lived in London, Brockenhurst, Hampshire and Somerton, Somerset, where he died.   Ashmolean, Oxford, British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum hold his work.

ROBERT TAVENER 1920-2004.  

Born in London.  Studied at Hornsey College of Art 1946-1950.   Taught at Medway College of Art.  Moved to Eastbourne in 1953. Head of Printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design.   Later became Vice Principal until his retirement in 1980.   He was a prolific illustrator and printmaker.  He held many one man shows.   Exhibited R.A. for 34 years in succession.  His work is held in many public collections including the V & A and the Government Art Collection.

ERNEST HERBERT WHYDALE A.R.E. 1886 - 1952

Painter and etcher, especially of horse and genre subjects.  Born in Halifax , Yorkshire.  Studied at Westminster School of Art and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.  Exhibited R.A., R.E., R.S.A. and Fine Art Society.  Lived in Royston, Hertfordshire.  There he built a studio called Fag's Folly, where he taught and with his brother Arthur promoted amateur theatricals.  Painted from a horse drawn caravan.  Victoria and Albert Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and South London Art Gallery hold his work.

R.A., R.E. 1851-1931.  Well known, prolific and much sought after marine and coastal painter and etcher.  Born in London, he studied at Heatherly's and at the R.A. Schools.  Exhibited R.A., R.E., R.B.A., DOW, FIN and elsewhere.  He lived in Portsmouth and died in London.
